Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state.  The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region.  The ETHS educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

This Day In East Tennessee History

  • October 25, 1861

On this day in 1861, the first commander of the Department of East Tennessee for the Confederacy, Brigadier General Felix K. Zollicoffer reported "reliable information" that 10,000 Union troops were advancing on Cumberland Gap.  The information proved the be false and costly to Zollicoffer as he moved his forces based on this information.
