Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state.  The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region.  The ETHS educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

  • April 16, 1908

    On this day in 1908, a four-hour debate between Governor Patterson and former Senator Edward Ward Carmack over prohibition in a crowd-packed Chattanooga auditorium opened the greatest series of political discussions held in Tennessee since Bob and Alf Taylor had fascinated the people with the "War of the Roses."
